Sea oats are extremely important in stabilizing beaches. They have root systems up to 40 feet long. As sand accumulates at the base of the plants, they are stimulated to grow above the pile and eventually dunes are formed. Their large root systems anchor the dunes, and the plants provide food for beach mice, rabbits and birds.
